Sharon Verzeni's partner's remorse: “I wouldn't have left her alone at that hour.” The raid on their home, the fight after the crime

She had gone out later than usual on the evening of Sharon Verzeni's murder, between 29 and 30 July. She did not always do it alone, as her partner Sergio Ruocco tells us, who admitted in a weak voice to Corriere della Sera that he had no idea who or why had come to kill his girlfriend: “We'll talk about it when we know something.” The 37-year-old plumber is described by his landlord and neighbours as a serious and reliable worker. For now, the investigations coordinated by prosecutor Emanuele Marchisio do not rule out any hypothesis. But so far, no suspicions have emerged regarding Ruocco, nor any details that could even suggest his involvement in the crime.

The 16 year relationship

The couple had been dating for 16 years now. For the past three years, they had been living in the house they had bought in Terno d'Isola, in the Bergamo region. A strategic position because it was halfway between their respective families. Together, they had just finished the parish course for engaged couples. But they still had to decide on the wedding date.

Dinner before the crime

The day before Sharon Verzeni was murdered, she was working as usual at the pastry shop where she is a barista until 3 p.m. She had done some shopping and was waiting for her partner at the end of the day. That evening, when it was already 10 p.m., Ruocco said he fell asleep, tired after a day of work. From that moment on, his account of the events stops.

Boyfriend's Remorse

Verzeni's boyfriend reiterates that he only discovered everything that happened that evening at 4 a.m., when the police woke him up at home: “I didn't realize anything.” Her relatives knew that the barmaid was used to taking long walks in the evening, as the woman's father had also confirmed. The 33-year-old took advantage of the cooler hours of the day to go for a walk, on the advice of the dietician. But that evening, something had been different: “Sharon sometimes went for a walk in the evening because of the heat, alone or sometimes with me. But if I had known she would be away at that time, I would not have left her.”

The walk

Sharon Verzeni had gone out at midnight the day before his death. With headphones on and sneakers, he walked the usual route for almost an hour, until he reached Via Castegnate, on the outskirts of the city, where the ambush took place. The 33-year-old man was apparently attacked suddenly, without even having time to scream. Despite the many open windows, no one would have heard the first cries of fear.

The witness and the compact loader

Verzeni was stabbed four times. There is a witness who, at that moment, heard her calling for help. Another tenant of the same condominium confirmed a detail yesterday, after another person living nearby had already spoken about it. They both heard the sound of a loud skidding: “Then I pulled the shutter and saw the girl on the ground.”

The descent to the apartment

Already rescued in very serious conditions, Sharon Verzeni died at Giovanni XXIII's house in Bergamo. The police searched the home of the woman and her partner. They immediately examined and photographed him, looking for possible injuries on his body or suspicious bruises. They questioned and searched him, looking for arguments or any other reason that could have pushed the man to kill his partner. But the investigators found nothing.
