Turin, 6 euros are missing for the trip to the hospital: the taxi leaves a fifty-year-old stranded and the kidney transplant risks failing

A fifty-year-old's taxi ride to Turin turned into a nightmare. Kanda, a mason of Malian origin, who arrived in the Piedmontese capital around ten years ago, must go to the Molinette Center for a “transplant”. He had been waiting for the phone call for months, the hospital “has a compatible kidney” for the operation. He is very happy, he finally sees the end of his health problems. He takes a taxi, but when he arrives at Corso Bramante, Kanda – writes Corriere della Sera – he realizes that he only has 15 euros in his pocket, or 6 less than the cost of the trip. “I told the taxi driver that I would go to the ATM to withdraw money, but I couldn't find any work nearby – he said -. At that point I came back and asked the man to wait longer. I thought about going to the hospital counter, but he told me he had to go back to work and left. And my backpack with my credit cards, ID and all my medical records was left in the backseat.”

Finding the backpack on the street

The fifty-year-old managed to reach the Molinette transplant center – with another taxi – and entered the operating room a few hours later. The operation appears to have been a complete success. Today, Kanda is hospitalized in intensive care where he received a visit on Monday from an officer from the San Salvario local police command. In fact, police found his backpack on the street, not far from the structure. “There will be investigations to understand what happened, but it seems likely to me that the taxi driver abandoned him in the street when he realized that Kanda had left his luggage in the car” , puts forward the hypothesis Rosario Cutri, former consultant of the International Training Center. of the UN in Turin.

Kanda's story

Aged 50, of Malian origin, in Italy for ten years, Kanda “arrived in our country on a boat, leaving his brothers in Bamako. He obtained a residence permit and always worked with regular contracts. However, his health problems had become serious and he awaited this transplant like a mirage. He also took the forklift driver course and starting to work for him again means bringing closer the possibility of finding his family,” he concludes. The fifty-year-old is still hospitalized, but he intends – the investigators specify – to file a complaint.
