Todde and the previous attempts of the 5 stars to conquer a region: from Molise to Umbria

Alessandra Todde is expected to win regional elections in Sardinia and will likely be the first M5 member to become governor of a region in Italy. Before her, no grillino had ever succeeded. The one who comes closest is Andrea Greco, candidate for governor of Molise in 2018, the year of the M5 electoral boom: he finished second with 38.5% of the votes in the elections won by Forzista Donato Toma with 43.46%. El Greco was only supported by the movement founded by Beppe Grillo. However, in four regional elections, the so-called “wide field” had already formed with a common candidate between the M5, the Pd and other center-left parties. In all four cases the experiment failed. The one who was most successful was the first, in Umbria in 2019: the independent Vincenzo Bianconi was the candidate who obtained 37.48%, but was beaten by the current governor of the Northern League, Donatella Tesei (57.55%). The second attempt to obtain a large place in the regional elections took place in Calabria in 2021: the independent Amalia Bruni was the candidate who obtained 27.68%, losing to the current governor of Forzista, Roberto Occhiuto (54 .46%). Third attempt in 2023 in Lombardy, and third defeat. The candidate of the broad field is the Democratic Party Roberto Majorino, who obtained 33.93%, beaten by the current governor of the Northern League, Attilio Fontana. Fourth and final attempt in Molise in 2023. Grillino candidate Roberto Gravina was the wide candidate: he obtained 36.32% of the votes, but clearly lost to Forza Italia candidate Francesco Roberti (62.24%).
