Sharon Verzeni Murder, 40 DNA Profiles Examined: “We Already Know If the Killer Is a Man or a Woman”

Investigators hope that from the 40 DNA samples already taken from residents of the town of Terno d'Isola, in the Bergamo region, additional, perhaps decisive, details will emerge about the murder of Sharon Verzeni. The 33-year-old woman was stabbed four times in the street during one of her evening walks. According to investigators, it is very likely that the victim knew her killer. Or her killer, because for the moment it is not excluded that the killer was a woman. Among the 40 profiles examined, in addition to residents of the neighborhood, there are also family members and first responders, to exclude people who took care of her after the young woman called 118 for help on the evening of the murder. The samples will be compared to the woman's clothing, to samples taken during the autopsy and to some knives recovered during the first phase of the investigation. According to geneticist Giuseppe Novelli, from the University of Rome Tor Vergata, who in 2014 for the case of Yara Gambirasio had coordinated the DNA map of what was then defined as “Unknown 1”, investigators already know whether it was a man or a woman: “The comparison with other genetic profiles is in fact only possible if the DNA profile has been carried out, obtained from the traces found on the victim or at the scene of the crime.”

Murder of Sharon Verzeni, all the doubts of the investigators

Three weeks after Verzeni's brutal murder on 30 July at 1am, many doubts remain. For now, it cannot be ruled out that an unknown person killed her, without a specific motive. A hypothesis that frightens local residents, who hope that the killer will soon be identified. However, there is one element that supports the hypothesis that the killer was an “acquaintance” of the victim, although this is not decisive. Like the hole in the camera that films Verzeni at the entrance to Via Castegnate and then nothing for three minutes, despite a journey of just under 200 metres. The 33-year-old woman may have met someone she knew, who was waiting right there to ambush her, and she may have stopped to chat. The only hypotheses for now, nothing else emerges from the more than 100 hours of footage filmed by all the cameras in the area. The identity of the unknown person who passed by on a bicycle in those minutes, and who could have some useful information, also remains unknown. And even the woman's family situation no longer gives any certainty: working at the Vanilla bar in Brembate, reading a few books in her free time, living with Sergio Ruocco – whose alibi for the night of the crime has been confirmed several times -, taking walks in the evening to avoid the heat and following the dietician's instructions to lose weight before choosing the wedding dress and, recently, getting closer to a Scientology group recommended to her by her colleagues at the bar. Few friendships, few acquaintances, few contacts even on her mobile phone, the forensic copy of which is being examined by investigators. However, no calls or messages were made or received while Sharon was walking.
