Jasmine Paolini had no choice but to play at the US Open. The Italian, world number 5, was stopped in the round of 16, beaten in two sets by the Czech Karolina Muchova, WTA number 52.
Tuscany had also started well, taking a 3-1 lead, but then the Czech picked up the pace and the Italian dropped her serve twice, her opponent closing the first set 6-3. Even in the second set, the number 5 had taken a 3-2 lead but Muchova recovered by scoring four consecutive games and thus closing the match in two 6-3, 6-3.
In the quarter-finals, the Czech will meet the Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia (world number 21) who won 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 against the Danish Caroline Wozniacki (WTA number 71).
