The nuclear power plant fire

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) says it is currently unable to “draw definitive conclusions” on the cause of the fire that broke out two days ago at Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. However, the IAEA says it is unlikely that the fire could have started “from the base of the cooling tower”, adding that it did not find “remains of tires or drones” during its inspection of the structure yesterday. In a statement posted on its website, the IAEA explains that “following the request to immediately assess the impact of the fire”, its experts were granted “access to the area” yesterday morning. During the visit to the cooling tower, “it was determined that the damage was most likely concentrated inside” the structure, with burnt areas in equipment “higher up”. A more in-depth inspection will be requested in the coming hours. “The nuclear safety of the plant has not been compromised, and there is no radioactive material in the area of the towers,” the IAEA said.
