Milan, tensions in Beccaria prison: mattresses set on fire in the cell, eight injured. All the escaped boys have been recovered

On Saturday evening, a riot broke out inside the Cesare Beccaria juvenile prison in Milan. The toll was eight prisoners injured and three escapees, only rescued in those hours by the police. The boys had managed to escape by using knotted sheets as ropes to lower themselves from the perimeter wall of the penitentiary. Several firefighters were dispatched to the scene during the night. Likewise, the police and the prison police in riot gear were also present in via Calchi Taeggi. “The prisoners set fire to various rooms and attempted a mass escape by reaching the sentry box, the last door of the penitentiary to the outside. The prison police, still in reduced numbers, are doing their best to contain what appears to be a real riot. The institute is currently surrounded from the outside by other law enforcement agencies,” Gennarino De Fazio, secretary general of the Uilpa prison police, told Corriere. “For too long, prisons, both for adults and minors, which actually house prisoners up to the age of 25, have been literally in disarray, in widespread illegality and at the mercy of the consequences, even violent ones, that result from this. The prison police are paying the price, increasingly abandoned to their own devices by political slogans, far from tackling head-on the age-old problems that are very serious and numerous,” he stressed. Today, the situation seems to have returned to normal.
