In Ukraine, Macron calls for a “strategic leap”. “Is this our war or not? Can we turn away? I don't think so.” – The video

“Who started the war in Ukraine? Who threatens with nuclear weapons? Let's be clear about what is happening in Europe. » It is with these words that French President Emmanuel Macron published on X a video of the press conference with his Czech counterpart held in Prague. The number one at the Elysée “assumed his responsibility” for having requested a “strategic leap” by evoking the possibility of sending Western troops to Ukraine, warning against “the spirit of defeat which lurks”.

“We can’t look away”

“Is this our war or not our war? Can we look away, think that things can continue to unfold? I don't think so, so it's a strategic leap that I requested and that I fully accept,” explained the French head of state. “We don't want an escalation, we have never “been belligerent”, Macron insisted. With Czech President Petr Pavel, he also judged Prague's initiative to buy munitions outside the European Union to support Ukraine to be “extremely useful”. And again, s addressing his European allies: “We are certainly approaching a moment for Europe where we must not be cowardly.”

The French strategic leap goes to the heart of the problem, even at the parliamentary level. Support for kyiv will be voted on March 12 in the Assembly and March 13 in the Senate, parliamentary sources announced to AFP, while the Head of State will receive party leaders this Thursday to discuss the Ukrainian situation . Russia said Tuesday it had dispatched a fighter jet to intercept three French military planes approaching its border over the Black Sea, an action that highlights tensions with Paris in recent weeks.
