Giuseppe Conte's “enough” to Beppe Grillo: “Stop influencing the 5 stars”. But in Liguria, the founder could reach an agreement with Orlando

“I myself was surprised by Grillo's reaction, knowing that he has always preached the founding principle of democracy from below. Now that this is happening, according to clear and shared rules, I am struck by his willingness to set limits or predetermine certain results.” With these words, the former prime minister and leader of the M5S, Giuseppe Conte, responds to the founder Beppe Grillo who, in recent days, has criticized his leadership, attacking certain hypotheses such as that of the elimination of the second term of elected officials. The 5 Star Constituent Assembly, the first since the creation of the Movement, risks being under high tension. “I do not see this risk – Conte underlines today in an interview with Republic – we have started an unstoppable constituent process to give everyone the opportunity to express themselves on the themes and strategic objectives of the Movement. In just four days, 8 thousand contributions have already been received, from members and non-members, with various political proposals or changes to the organizational rules.” He rejects accusations of having transformed the M5S into a personal party. “It is completely absurd. I do not remember that in the past there has ever been a basic constituent assembly with complete freedom to oust even the leader or approve orientations with which he did not agree,” he said. “Grillo – he adds – has assumed specific contractual commitments that oblige him never to raise questions about the use of the symbol by the Movement, which has already been modified several times and is registered in the name of the association 5 Star Movement and not of individuals.” And he returns to the dual mandate: “A discussion has been underway for some time on the dual mandate that has already led to a change of rule before I came to the head of the M5S. I do not want to influence the result in any way, I simply point out that, especially during some administrative sessions, the rule risks disadvantaging us.” “Grand plan – he then specifies – is a journalistic formula that means nothing. I want to build a serious alternative to Meloni who has disappointed many of his own voters.”

Is Conte for Trump or Kamala Harris?

Among the foreign policy issues, there is also one related to the United States and the race for the White House. On this point, Conte is a “Christian Democrat”. “As an alternative force to Meloni for the government of the country, we will have to dialogue with the president elected by the American citizens,” he specifies. And to the fact that many consider Trump's victory a threat to democracy, he responds: “I do not agree, the free choice of citizens is never a threat to democracy. Even in Italy, this is an argument that I have never used against Meloni.”

What's happening in Liguria: Grillo and the anti-Conte pact with Orlando

According to what Tempo L'Elevato reports today, the friends of San Fruttuoso absolutely do not want a united centre-left around Luca Pirondini. The five-star senator is a trusted man of the former prime minister and a sworn enemy of Grillo. If he were to win, it would be the victory of the Roman movement, and not that of the origins, according to the newspaper. “This is why the founder is acting, by all available means, to destroy the Capitoline police project. It is no coincidence that the entry into the field of Nicola Morra, former president of the Antimafia and among the few ex-honourables who have openly criticized the current 5-star summit, takes place on the same day that the centre-left party “It seems to have convinced itself of the wisdom of leaving the leadership of the battle for the post-Toti era to those five-star vigilantes who, before the advent of Meloni, had dealt the cards at Palazzo Chigi”, reports Il Tempo. And behind all this there is a suggestion: “Giving the presidency to a divided movement – explains the newspaper, taking up the voices of some of the leaders of the latter in the corridors of the Nazarene – means losing from the start. Not everyone likes Orlando, but at least he is known.”
