Franco Di Mare, the lawyer's doubts about asbestos in the Viale Mazzini office: “No response from the RAI on the restoration”

In 2006 Franco Di Mare, then host of One morning, interviewing the current president of the National Asbestos Observatory (Ona) Ezio Bonanni, he was the “first journalist to talk about asbestos on Rai1”. Nearly twenty years later, Bonanni helps Di Mare get Rai his service record, compensation, and some important answers about what responsibilities – if any – the company has. Di Mare was RAI's Balkan correspondent and worked for the public broadcaster for more than 30 years. A few days ago he spoke to What weather is it to announce that he suffers from mesothelioma, an aggressive cancer in 90 percent of cases caused by exposure to asbestos dust. The journalist also said that from Viale Mazzini they never responded to his requests to have the service book, a document that certifies where the employee worked and for how long. It is necessary to know the responsibilities of the company which “has the responsibility to verify what are the risks for one of its employees sent to war zones and to implement all the necessary protective measures”, explained Bonanni. In an interview with the agency Say, the lawyer explains that there are other cases similar to that of Di Mare. And not just employees sent abroad.

Doubts about the Viale Mazzini headquarters

“Di Mare contracted mesothelioma because there is a specific responsibility of Rai, which should have provided him with the requested data,” says Bonanni, “in Rai there are also other cases of mesothelioma that we are following as a National Asbestos Observatory. Pause: “But are we talking about the presence of asbestos inside the Viale Mazzini headquarters?”, asks the journalist from Say. “Yes,” assures Bonanni, “I requested access to the documents to check if the seat had been recovered, but I have not yet been authorized.” At least two other people who worked with him during this period as a correspondent later showed symptoms of respiratory illness. Regarding service status, the lawyer explains that Rai was wrong to refuse it to him, “the internal Code of Ethics would in fact have imposed a different type of behavior. But we will see it in the competent judicial authorities. »
