“Bombs” of colored flour and bells, this is how Lent begins in Galaxidi

The smoke bombs, the people in the streets, colorful and floury, writhe to the sound of the music and the bells. Legend has it that this is how you bring out your “inner child”: it’s the flour war which traditionally takes place every year in the small seaside town of Galaxidi in central Greece

The celebrations coincide, according to the Orthodox calendar, with the end of the carnival period and the beginning of Lent: the flour corresponds to the ashes with which we sprinkle ourselves to remove sin.
