“You won't believe it, but I tell you anyway… When we want to do God's will, people's minds rebel. My wife was possessed, which is to say… my wife is practically dead. This is how the telephone call to the police switchboard from Giovanni Barreca began, a 54-year-old mason indicted for the triple murder of Altavilla Milicia, in the Palermo region. His wife Antonella Salamone and his two sons, aged 16 and 5, Kevin and Emmanuel, died in a “mystical” massacre which probably lasted several days. Instead, the other 17-year-old girl resurfaced and later confessed to participating in the crimes herself. In the phone call made to police after midnight on February 11, Barreca spoke of demons and spirits. “The spirits?” asks the surprised soldier on the other end of the line. “I'm in the country and I…maybe my only hope is my daughter. I had to run away because I believe in God, the demons ate me too,” says Giovanni Barreca during the phone call to 112, as reported by Mail.
Police checks and the rush home
Faced with such disjointed sentences, the police officer does not really know how to react. But the 54-year-old from Palermo continues: “The spirits have also blocked my car and I am here in Casteldaccia, leaving the highway,” says Barreca, indicating that he wants to surrender to the military. According to what the investigation has reconstructed so far, the three murders were preceded by torture committed by a religious sect calling itself “The Brothers of God”. According to investigators, Barreca, his 17-year-old daughter and two other friends committed the massacre: Massimo Carandente and his partner Sabrina Fina. Precautionary prison measures were ordered for all four. “I want to do the will of God,” says Barreca during the phone call to 112. To which the carabinieri asks: “And what is the will of God?” Barreca has a ready answer: “Do the right things, live and love your neighbor as yourself.” A few minutes after this telephone exchange, a carabinieri patrol picked up Giovanni Barreca at the location indicated during the telephone call. Another patrol heads towards the man's house and realizes the massacre that has just taken place.
