A death every two days on construction sites: “There is a lack of training”

On construction sites, an employee dies every two days. And in one in three cases, they work in a different professional environment. Such as the installation of facilities, to which the metalworkers' contract applies as provided for in the union agreements between the social partners. This is what the CGIA of Mestre says, which has compiled some statistics on deaths at work. From which we see that the construction site is the place most at risk. Because workers who carry out construction activity but do not have the corresponding Ccnl are not required to follow the compulsory training provided for builders.

And this makes workers less aware and less prepared to deal with the risks and dangers they may encounter during the workday. Unfortunately, the data available – for the CGIA – does not allow us to “weigh” how many construction companies apply the metallurgy contract rather than the construction contract. But it's clear that too many workers are entering construction sites without adequate safety training. If among the main irregularities noted by the Labor Inspectorate during the control activity, there are notably poorly anchored scaffolding, the absence of paths inside the site dedicated to vehicles and/or pedestrians or the absence/ the insufficiency of collective protection devices (parapets, shielding, barriers), means that there is still a lot of work to do in terms of prevention.
