Trump returns to X after a year of silence. The message before Elon Musk's interview

After almost a year of silence, Donald Trump is back online. Despite his rehabilitation on the platform, the former American president had nevertheless decided to share his thoughts with Truth, the social network created by Trump Media and Technology Group in 2022. Only one post had appeared on August 24, 2023, namely the historic photo taken during his 20-minute arrest, with immediate release on bail, for having tried with 18 other allies to overturn the vote in Georgia. But now, after almost a year, Trump has decided to rehabilitate his account with various types of statements, announcements and videos. “They want to silence me because I will never let them silence you,” Trump said in a presidential campaign video in November. “They don’t have it with me. They’re mad at you,” he added. Then more posts, including one where he asks users: “Are you better now than when I was president? Our economy is destroyed. Our border has been erased. We are a nation in decline.”

The flood of posts comes on the day of the live interview that Trump will undergo tonight, Monday, August 12, at 8 pm Washington time (2 am in Italy) on X. His campaign defines it, always on social media, as “the interview of the century”. But not only for the interviewee, but also – and perhaps above all – for the presenter, that is, the owner of X, as well as a supporter of the Republican candidate Elon Musk. “There are no limits on the topics – wrote the Tesla owner – so it should be a lot of fun. If you have specific questions and comments, post them in the chat.” Musk announced his support for Trump immediately after the former president was attacked at a campaign event in Pennsylvania last month.

EU warning to Musk ahead of interview: 'No to fake news'

The European Commissioner for the Internal Market, Therry Breton, immediately warned Musk, calling on him to respect the new European legislation on digital services in terms of monitoring and removing problematic or illegal content. Threatening otherwise to “use all the tools at our disposal, including temporary measures, to protect European citizens”. Back to the times – according to an investigation Financial Times-Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan – also in the management of the economy (42% against 41%), which, with immigration, was a subject in which Trump had always been one step ahead. While for Musk, the interview with The Donald could represent a return of popularity that would renew interest in X, weakened during his management by his right-wing and anti-Semitic drift, the lack of moderation of content and the flight of advertisers. But not only that. Musk could have other objectives: to contain, for example, the opposition of Trump and his deputy Vance to subsidies. Green who contributed significantly to Tesla's success.
