Treviso, 57, falls ill on a plane before landing in Vienna. Colleague: “He was fine, then he collapsed”

He was arriving in Vienna for an international conference, the plane was about to land when he suddenly lost consciousness. Gianpietro Scomparin, 57, from San Donà di Piave, ICT manager at the “Giovanni XXIII” hospital at Monastier in Treviso since 2010, died shortly after his arrival at the hospital, despite long attempts at resuscitation. On the flight that accompanied him was a colleague, the general director of the hospital Gabriele Geretto, to participate in the European Congress of Radiology which was held in Vienna from February 28 to March 3. It was Geretto who immediately noticed something was wrong, suddenly and unexpectedly. “We were landing and we were talking. He was fine, no warning signs,” he explained later, still in shock, as reported by Corriere della Sera“I looked out the window for a moment, then I turned back to Gianpietro and saw him with his head down. I thought he was resting. I tried to talk to him but nothing. It was terrible”.

The flight attendants intervened immediately after his request for help and attempted to resuscitate him with a defibrillator for more than half an hour. Once on the ground, rescuers waiting for him on the runway arrived on the plane and transferred him to hospital by ambulance, where Scoparin died shortly after. “A friend has left us, for me a brother,” says Geretto, “a person on whom we could always count. During the many years we spent together in the company, Gianpietro always showed himself to be a prepared person, an IT genius, worthy of his role as ICT technical manager of the structure. Able to solve even the most difficult IT problems that might arise but above all get along with everyone and always smile. A good and cheerful person, always ready to help anyone who needs it. I'm shocked. We will miss a great man.”
