The 50-year-old suspected of killing two people in an apartment in San Candido, South Tyrol, was seriously injured after the raid by the carabinieri. The man had barricaded himself in the house after killing Waltraud Jud, 50, who lives in the same building last night. The father of the alleged killer, a 90-year-old former gamekeeper, was also found dead in the apartment. However, it is not yet clear whether he was shot by mistake or to prevent him from shooting.
The argument and the shooting
Late yesterday evening, August 17, neighbors heard noises of an argument inside the apartment and the smell of gas. When the firefighters arrived, the fifty-year-old fired a few shots. On this occasion, he hit Waltraud Jud who had gone out onto the landing. The last shots were heard around 4 a.m. The man is said to have used his father's rifle.
The police raid
At 11:30 am, the GIS carabinieri, who had arrived from Livorno, broke into the apartment, after placing explosives on the door to gain entry. The fifty-year-old shot at the soldiers, who did not return fire. He then hid in another room of the house, where he seriously injured his throat after turning the weapon on himself.
The Civil Protection alarm
Suspecting that the killer may have escaped, the Civil Protection had issued an alert to residents not to leave their homes. The station area is also isolated, with trains and buses diverted from the city stop.
