Sardinia and the torments of the Third Pole: Calenda speaks of dialogue with Conte, Renzi of space at the center (but he makes alliances with the civics)

If it had not been for the lists that supported Alessandra Todde, the Largo camp would have lost the elections in Sardinia (just as the right would have won them). But it is also true that, despite the presence of a strong candidate like Renato Soru, the Third Pole did not manage to exceed the 10% threshold and did not elect any councilor, recording results much lower than those indicated by national polls. Reading Sunday's post-regional vote, with all the differences attached to it, all parties opposed to the government are thinking about their future given that for the first time since September 2022, they nevertheless recorded an important result. The most explicit, first on Twitter then in a long interview with the Huffington Post, is the leader of Action, Carlo Calenda: “We have learned our lesson”.

That is to say, explains the leader of Action: “At the Regionals, running alone, even with a project like what happened in Sardinia and Lombardy with Letizia Moratti, is not feasible and we cannot will do it more. Because for a third party candidate – even if the 8% in Sardinia and the 10% in Lombardy should not be thrown away – they are unthinkable. This is also why we are part of a broad coalition in Abruzzo, with a very competent candidate, for whom we are spending a lot. We are also thinking about it in Basilicata, but nothing is understood there.” In short, given that in 2022 Calenda chose to leave the alliance with the Democratic Party due to the presence of the left Avs (except that 'he then finds himself in Sardinia with Rifondazione Comunista, but that's another story), he says today that the dialogue will have to begin, at least at the local level, even with Giuseppe Conte who has always considered him very distant : “Of course, not at all costs.” In Abruzzo, Action participates in the coalition which supports Luciano D'Amico with his symbol and which includes the entire center-left to try to prevent the confirmation of Marco Marsilio, outgoing governor , from Fratelli d'Italia, very close to Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

Matteo Renzi and the center

Matteo Renzi allows himself a joke while leaving the Senate authorization committee. He certainly congratulates the winner, but reserves the role of Italia Viva: “There is an objective victory for the Pd-M5s alliance which, I believe, will now be greatly strengthened. This is excellent news for us because it opens a space that is very difficult to manage in regional elections, where voting is in a single round, but it opens a space for those who do not want the Italy of the right . wing batons and do not want Italy's subsidies from the 5 Star Movement. The Democratic Party is burning out, the right is going to extremes, it's an extraordinary space in the center for the European elections. The fact that Pd and 5s come together is excellent for me.” The coordinator, Raffaella Paita, confirms the line: “I understand Calenda's thoughts but we, on the other hand, remain proudly alternative to the Five Star Movement and a wide grilled field . We are convinced that a space at the center exists and that it can materialize.” That said, at least when it comes to local elections, Italia Viva is certainly making deals. Although with a different name, Riformisti e civici, and a symbol in which only aficionados can recognize the comma of Italia Viva, he will support Luciano D'Amico in Abruzzo. He could find an agreement in Florence with the PD candidate, Sara Funaro, given that on other occasions, from Lombardy and Liguria, he has chosen alternative alliances to the PD.

The European node

The first important test will be the European Championships. On Saturday, +Europa organized an initiative for “the United States of Europe” in which various forces participated and Elly Schlein also stopped by “to say hello”. Renzi, who would not appear personally, said he was available for the project Riccardo Magi is working on, while Calenda seemed more doubtful. The goal is to say something more concrete by March 8, when the Leopolda leaves Florence and the leader of the IV will certainly want to chart the next steps.
