This choice has little (if probably no) precedent. The current director of DIS, that is to say head of the Italian secret services, Elisabetta Belloni was appointed by the Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, representative for the Italian presidency of the G7. The news, reported by Dagospia but verified by Open, changes the diplomatic geography of the coming months, given that what is called in the jargon “sherpa” plays a delicate role in relations with the other members of the G7, in the year of the Italian Presidency. The current appointee, Ambassador Luca Ferrari, was reportedly not well-liked in handling the prime minister's latest trip to the United States and Canada. And given that the role of the G7 is highly fiduciary, Giorgia Meloni reportedly decided to change on the fly. Dagospia speculates that Ferrari could soon be sent to Washington – but Open reports that the final destination will be Israel – and that this mission could be a prelude to replacing Belloni as head of the services.
