Quality of life, healthcare and transport are the Achilles heel of Italian cities

Italians are generally satisfied with life in their cities.

According to what emerges from the investigation “Quality of life in European cities”conducted by the European Commission with the contribution of Istat in a selection of European cities, Italian cities assessed the share of the population satisfied with life in their city in 2023 it is generally high (above 80%).

But there are significant differences, which once again underline the seriousness gap between North and South.

The minimum value is recorded at Taranto (47.8%) and the maximum value has Thirty (95.4%). Thirty in particular also occupies first place in the European ranking, out of 85 cities. However, a relatively small share of the Italian population believes that quality of life is improved over the last five years. They do exception Bari and Messina.

Regarding health services the highest percentage of satisfaction is located in the North and the lowest in the Southwhile in general Italians are less satisfied with public transport compared to their European neighbors. Furthermore, those living in Italian cities, as well as European citizens, are satisfied with schoolwhile a weak point in Italy is represented by street cleaning.

In six Italian cities, we observe very high percentages of population satisfied with living in their city (above 90%) and they are: Trento, Trieste, Cagliari, Bergamo, Brescia, Bolzano/Bozen.

If in Bari more than half of the population believes that the quality of life has improved over the last 5 years (one of the best results at European level), more than half of the citizens of some Italian cities believe that the quality of life in their city has deteriorated. Most Italian citizens think this way Florence, Sassari, Bolzano/Bozen, Catania, Parma, Rome, Venice and Reggio Calabria.

Feel satisfied with schools and other training services they represent a large part of the EU's urban population, including the Italian population. With reference to cultural infrastructure (theaters, museums, libraries) the Italian cities with the highest levels of satisfaction are Milan, Trento, Bergamo, Parma, Bresca, Trieste, Bolzano/Bozen, Florence.

In around three-quarters of Italian cities, less than half of residents are satisfied with the cleanliness of the city. All southern towns and major cities are part of this group. Among the 20 main EU cities in which the car is indicated as the most used means of transport, we find almost all Italian cities in the center and south, but also some cities in the north.

Housing, solidarity and hospitality

In much of the city of the investigation universe, relatively small percentages of people find it easy to find good housing at a reasonable price. The problem is strongly accentuated in Florence, Milan and Bolzano/Bozen (where less than 5% of residents consider finding accommodation to be a simple operation). In all the cities observed, beyond 50% of residents believe they can count on material help from their friends, neighbors and other people in case of need. In all cities examined, the majority of residents believe that their city is a good place to live for the general population, but less so for the immigrant population. The lowest percentages of those who consider the city as a welcoming place for immigrants are observed in some southern cities but also in Trieste and Genoa, while the highest percentage is found in Bologna (with values similar to those of Madrid and Helsinki).

Low perceived effectiveness ofLocal public administration is expressed in almost all cities in southern Italy and in cities like Rome, Florence, Perugia, Genoa, Milan, Turin, Venice.. The highest values are instead found in northern Italian cities, which have values similar to many German, French, Spanish and Eastern European cities.
