Pupo, sex addiction and betrayal by his mother: “Growing up, I forgave him, my father was not an easy man”

“The suffering I endured has made me a better person. If I had disappeared 15 years ago, I would have gone down in history as the pop singer who ate everything, an idiot.” Corriere della Sera Enzo Ghinazzi, known to all as Pupo, speaks about a life for music but not only. The singer, 68, is also known for having been confronted with a gambling addiction, and for his polyamorous relationship with his wife Anna and his partner Patricia, a complex relationship that he has learned to manage over time: “They both love each other. very much. I got married at 18 and a half with Anna. On July 28th we will celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary, I am taking the whole family to New York. We have been together with Patricia for 35 years, she does not intend to wait until she is 50, she wants me to take her on a trip for a week as soon as possible, I will have to please her. Having two wives is expensive.” In the past, he discovered that he was also addicted to sex, after a visit to the andrologist: “He explained to me that it mainly affected short lines. I'm better now but it was hard, I betrayed a lot.” At the same time, he built his family with two parallel relationships and in broad daylight: “I don't recommend it and I'm not proud of it. For us, it happened gradually, not without suffering. We overcame the mountain grand prix, today we represent a semi-miracle, we are united. In the future, polyamory will be more and more common, I was a pioneer.”

“You never really get out of gambling addiction”

Ghinazzi has said in the past that he “placed” his first bet at the age of 8 on an ice cream, the first of many that cost him a fortune. “I never calculated how much I lost. In 1983 in St. Vincent, a railway lost 130 million lire in 3 seconds,” recalls Pupo, also talking about a historic poker game with Gianni Morandi – “we are like brothers” – that lasted 8 hours on a flight from Rome to New York, “Gianni is an excellent player, not like me who is a professional, eh. That time he beat me, he won a million lire.” But the gambling addiction, although fought, is still there: “You never really get out of it. Now I “sleep”, I haven't played for years, it's crazy suffering.” There are some regrets, but at 68, he looks back and remains serene: “With this ending, I would start again. I am also about to become a grandfather for the fourth time. I am now a resolute, serene person, a man who has gotten up a thousand times. I thought I wouldn't make it to 50, I'm almost 70, I've lived many lives, what happens is all the fat drains away.”

The parents

He later told Giovanna Cavalli of Corriere how he had caught his mother in bed with another man when he was 12. “I went into the room, I saw them and I left. I wrote a song about it, she never came out,” admitting that at first he thought badly of her, “It's her fault for my emotional state. She cheated on dad with a few men, no more. When I grew up, I understood, I forgave. He was a city postman, he gambled and made the family lose money, it wasn't easy to be with him.” At the time, he told his father: “Something happened, but they never broke up. I can't keep bad things inside. I also told my friends that I had seen their wives with others. I can't stay silent, you have to warn them.”
