As the biopic about Robert Oppenheimer continues its path to the Oscar, after the global box office success, traces of the story of the invention of the atomic bomb in real life are flying off the shelves. The documents relating to this historic event were indeed sold at auction in the United States, in Boston. The loot includes a letter signed by the head of the Manhattan Project himself, but also a document tracing the secret creation of the atomic bomb in the Los Alamos laboratory in New Mexico. It is called the “Smyth Report”: it hit the headlines in August 1945, a few days after the tragic events of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. According to the auction house RR Auction House: “These documents provide insight into the scientific and administrative path that led to the creation of one of humanity's most formidable weapons.” It was not just Oppenheimer who signed the text: at the bottom also appear the names of Enrico Fermi, famous for having created the first nuclear reactor, and Ernest Lawrence, Nobel Prize winner and pioneer of the cyclotron particle accelerator .
