“In Gaza, it is not a ‘genocide’”, resigns the president of Anpi Milano, Roberto Cenati

There is also disagreement within the ANPI over the use of the word “genocide” regarding the Israeli military response in the Gaza Strip following the Hamas massacre on October 7. The president of Anpi Milan since 2011, Roberto Cenati, resigned, contesting the use of the word “genocide” by the national leaders of the National Association of Partisans in relation to Israel's military response to Hamas. “Netanyahu's far-right government – Cenati told ANSA – after the despicable Hamas attack, committed a bloodbath, killing many people, including children and women. But the term “genocide” – he emphasizes – must be used “with sensitivity” because it is the scientifically planned extermination of a population. »

Cenati has led Anpi in Milan for 12 years now. Until now, he had tried to prevent the Milanese ANPI from getting involved in the pro-Palestinian demonstrations, by contesting the slogans used on this occasion. In a recent interview with Corriere della Sera, Cenati reiterated that it was “inappropriate to speak of genocide: a bloodbath and a humanitarian tragedy are taking place in Palestine. We ask the Israeli government for a ceasefire. But genocide is something else.” A position which earned him strong criticism within the association itself. Until the decision to resign.
