“Berlinguer – recalls the Head of State – was the leader of the Italian communist movement during a particularly difficult decade which saw him engage in the defense of the Constitution and democratic life against subversive attacks and terrorist attacks. The concern for peace and international cooperation led him to propose increasingly autonomous paths and choices, in the interest of the people. His contribution, both ideal and cultural, has. contributed to associating the workers who recognized themselves in the PCI to this path of European integration that Italy was capable of traveling as a protagonist.
