Florence, the 91-year-old man robbed and in a coma: “He helped the homeless, maybe also the woman who attacked him”

It was Thursday evening, August 29: a 91-year-old pensioner surprised some thugs in the entrance hall of his building in Via Maso Finiguerra (Florence). Hence the fight, the jostling and the robbery. He was thrown to the ground and ended up in a coma, hovering between life and death. The next few hours would be crucial for him, as investigators continued to search for one of the robbers. The only person identified was a 25-year-old Romanian woman, a well-known face to local residents, but no precautionary measures had been taken. It was in this area that he had found refuge: “It shouldn't have happened, it's incredible that it was this woman,” says a family member. The pensioner had in fact offered his help to many homeless people who had arrived in these streets, among whom, most likely, also the woman who had attacked him.

The fact

Many citizens reported the malaise spreading in the area among heroin and crack users and vagrants. Among them was also the young Romanian woman: many remember her begging since the first wave of the Covid pandemic. “We called the municipality and the police many times to report the situation, but nothing happened. It shouldn't have come to this,” laments one resident. And what hurts the pensioner's neighbors even more is that the 91-year-old was among the most active in the neighborhood in favor of the homeless: “He brought blankets to the homeless, I think of this woman too. Few people know it, I think he did it in secret, out of modesty,” they report to Republic.

The suspect

The police are currently investigating the role played by the woman and her alleged accomplice in the attack. It is possible that the elderly man hit his head when he fell, but the circumstances of the robbery are not yet clear: investigators want to know who pushed the pensioner. In the meantime, footage from neighborhood cameras is being examined.
