Filippo Ganna wakes up Italy: his first Italian medal in Paris. Silver in the individual time trial

Italy's first medal at the Paris 2024 Games goes to Filippo Ganna. The Italian finished second, and therefore silver, in the individual time trial won by the Belgian Remco Evenepoel. Bronze for the other Belgian overtaken by Ganna, Wout Van Aert. An incredible finish for Ganna, who definitely changed his pace in the final kilometres of the race, managing to regain 15 seconds on Van Aert. Also waiting for him at the finish were the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, and the President of CONI, Giovanni Malagò. First medal for Italy, after a disappointing start to the Olympics, particularly in fencing, with the elimination of Rossella Fiamingo, eliminated in the first round of the women's épée tournament.

The President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, greeted Filippo Ganna at the end of his road time trial test that earned Italy its first medal. The cyclist received a handshake and congratulations from the head of state with whom he then exchanged a few words. “We tried,” said Ganna, speaking of the chances of winning gold, and Mattarrella replied: “Good, good, go…”.
