Venice 81the new edition of Film Festival is expected from August 28 to September 7 and, as always, the lagoon lights up with collateral events dedicated to lovers of the seventh art and beyond. One of them is Oedipus Islandan exhibition born aroundOedipus the Kingthe historic sailing ship that hosted Pier Paolo Pasolini and Maria Callas, which has now become a creative laboratory that promotes artistic and cultural activities, with a strong commitment to social and environmental innovation.

For the seventh consecutive year, the heart of Isola Edipo is the Edipo Re Prize for Inclusion and Sustainabilityan official collateral award of the Biennale Cinema, directed by Silvia Jop. The award, promoted in collaboration with MYmovies and with the participation of Ca' Foscari, Fondazione Pittini, Habacus and the University of Padua, this year with the jury of Francesca d'Aloia, Esmeralda Calabria and Federica di Giacomo, supports the distribution of cinematographic works of high cultural and artistic value, capable of spreading an inclusive and sustainable look.

Isola Edipo arrives in the lagoon, paying homage to Basaglia

During the days of the Film Festival, in addition to the Prize, Isola Edipo presents a rich Event calendar which will take place on the historic ship, on the Riva Corinto of the Lido and in the Sala Lagoon of the Palazzo del Cinema. This year's theme, dedicated to the centenary of Franco Basaglia, is “Freedom is therapeutic”a tribute to the Basaglia revolution that marked the history of mental health in Italy. The photographic exhibition will be presented at the Sala Laguna, a new screening space in the heart of the Venice Film Festival dedicated to investigating the relationship between cinema and the arts. Dying in class by Gianni Berengo Gardin and Carla Cerati, symbol of Franco Basaglia's battle for the closure of psychiatric asylums.

Patti Smith and Stephan Crasneanscki, illustrious guests of Isola Edipo

From August 29 to September 1, Sala Laguna will host screenings of two iconic films – Medea by Pier Paolo Pasolini with Maria Callas and Andrei Rublev by Andrei Tarkovsky – source of inspiration for the project Correspondences Of Patti Smith And Stephan CrasneansckiThe multifaceted singer-songwriter and visionary photographer and filmmaker will present the songs entitled Pasolini And Medeareal audiovisual journeys that promise to enchant the public, provoking reflections and conversations around cinema and poetry, but also the climate and the environment.

On August 31 at 6 p.m., at the same location, a concert will take place free master class with the two artists, as part of the eighth edition of “Cinema of inclusion between vision and education” (reservations by email to laguna.edipore@gmail.com from August 19), while on September 2 at 8 p.m. at the Cinéma Flottant four films taken from Correspondencesfollowed by a performance by Soundwalk Collective and Patti Smith, and a short film by Artavazd Pelechian (Info and reservations on Cinemagalleggiante.it).

Other events not to be missed

Oedipus Island also puts the spotlight back on Venetian Nightsoutside the space created by Authors' Days under the artistic direction of Gaia Furrer and Silvia Jop. On the big screen this year, a selection of films that, together, intend to contribute to restoring a complex and composite, multifaceted and experimental vision of the contemporary Italian cinematographic panorama, both classic and independent.

The exhibition program is enriched by the seminar “The hidden power of a doll, a silent woman and a suspected murderer” promoted by Labodifa research, training and communication institute founded by the director Gianna Mazzini and the economist Giovanna Galletti. The seminar will be dedicated to the reinterpretation of three cinematographic works that marked last year's production: Anatomy of a fall, Barbie and There's Still Tomorrow.
