Alexandria, Salis visits firefighter accused of terrorism: “It's disproportionate, obvious political motivations” – Video

The visits to Italian prisons by the new MEP Ilaria Salis continue. This time, the honorable woman went to the San Michele Arcangelo prison in Alessandria. There she found “horrible” sanitary conditions. Salis also met Luigi Spera, a 42-year-old firefighter accused of terrorism for throwing Molotov cocktails at Leonardo's headquarters in Palermo. The episode dates back to 26 November 2022 when a group of activists damaged the company's premises and caused a fire. According to the MEP, the crime he is accused of is “disproportionate”.

“Self-harm is a daily occurrence”

“I have just left with a surprise visit to the San Michele Arcangelo prison. In this prison there are today 367 inmates for a capacity of 287 people”, begins Salis in his video, denouncing the overcrowding of the establishment. “Visiting the common sections, in addition to self-harm which is unfortunately a daily practice, the problems I encountered are first of all the difficulty of accessing medical care for understaffed care, which is also educational. I found the most criticized situation in the isolation sections, I found a “horrible” situation, people are abandoned to their own devices, there is rubbish abandoned in the corridors and showers”, deplores the MEP. Who also talks about his meeting with the firefighter: “In the high security section, I also had the opportunity to meet Luigi Spera. He is fit and combative. He carries a disproportionate load. He is being accused of terrorism in a specious manner and with obvious political motivations.”
