Serie A, the latest verdicts: Rome out of the Champions League, Turin dreams of Europe. Who is the last team to be relegated?

The 2023-2024 Serie A Tim season is over. The last matches of the 38th day were played on Sunday May 26, pending the resumption of Atalanta-Fiorentina on June 2. A championship dominated by Inter, who stole the tricolor from Naples after a disappointing year for the Azzurri. The most heated battle took place behind the Nerazzurri, that for access to the Champions League in which next year, thanks to the coefficients accumulated by the Italian teams over the previous five years, the first five of the ranking. Just behind five other teams, they kept alive their hopes of playing in a European tournament next season, thanks to a combination of results possible thanks to the finals won by Atalanta in the Europa League, which they went on to win, and by Fiorentina in the Conference League. , which will be played on Wednesday May 29. At the bottom of the table, Salernitana and Sassuolo have already been relegated, while until the very end, third place remained in play, hanging on the results of Empoli, playing at home against Roma, and Udinese against Frosinone.

Who goes to Europe

The new format of the 2024-2025 Champions League will see five Italian teams involved in the tournament. In addition to Italian champions Inter, Milan, Juventus, surprise Bologna and Atalanta will take part. The Bergamo team's 3-0 home victory against Torino closed the doors to Roma, who had hoped to qualify from sixth place. A possibility that the Giallorossi have cultivated because Orobic's team, winners of the Europa League, if they had qualified from fifth place in the standings, would have opened up an additional place for the Italians. And on the contrary, with this last victory, Atalanta conquers fourth position, still waiting for the resumption against the Viola – and the possibility of also overtaking Juventus. De Rossi's men, whatever the result at Empoli, qualify for the next edition of the Europa League, alongside Tudor's Lazio who need at least 1 point to secure seventh place. Fiorentina, alone in eighth place, with one game in hand, will be able to play in the Conference League again. But Viola has other ambitions. After winning two consecutive finals in the youngest of European competitions, if they won against Olympiacos, they would automatically access the Europa League, thus freeing up their place in the Conference. Torino can then dream of Europe, from ninth place in the standings, thanks to the draw in the league against Naples – stopped by the draw against Lecce – and thanks to the direct clashes with the Azzurri. To enter the Conference, however, the Granata need Fiorentina to win the Conference and finish eighth in the championship, behind Lazio. With a point against Sassuolo, Lazio is assured of seventh place and Torino only has to wait for the result of the Viola's European final. Otherwise, should Lazio lose and Fiorentina win in the Conference, Juric's team must hope that Fiorentina do not emerge with an injury-time victory against Atalanta.

Relegations

With Salernitana and Sassuolo already in Serie B, eyes on Empoli (third from last with 36 points), Udinese (fourth from last with 34) and Frosinone (35). The Tuscans play at home against Roma, who take the field in a match that has no impact on their ranking. In Stirpe, however, a final battle for survival takes place. Frosinone just need to win or draw with Udinese, in case of defeat they will only be saved if Empoli don't beat Roma. Udinese will not be relegated if they win, if they draw but Empoli do not win, if they lose and the Tuscans also lose. If the Friulians lose and Empoli draw, there will be an equal number of points, at 34, which would lead to a two-legged play-off. With a victory, Empoli is assured of its survival. In the event of a draw, they can only hope that Udinese lose and then risk everything in the play-off. For Frosinone, it is enough to win or draw against Udinese: in case of defeat, they will only be saved if Empoli do not beat Roma. However, it was the Ciociari who bid farewell to Serie A, losing at home while Empoli took three points against the Giallorossi.
