The light of Rome, the whiteness of marble and the moving poetry of water. On the occasion of the opening of the European Athletics Championships in Rome, the historic Fontana della Sfera began operating again, after a major redevelopment and renovation project. Historical symbol of the Foro Italico, the fountain was built in 1934, with the aim of allowing athletes of the time to cool off during training.
The monument, which reinforces the relationship between classicism and modernity, resembles a large marble sphere, apparently suspended from the jets of a pool of water.
Today it is the epicenter of the “Place des Médailles” which hosts the opening ceremony of the European Championships and, subsequently, the champion award ceremonies.
The Foro Italico square is emblematic for athletes and visitors to the region. It is a unique place in the world where sport, art, history, culture and nature mix to the point of confusion.
