Euro 2024, Scholz, Sanchez and Starmer together in Berlin for the final: the three left-wing prime ministers united by football (and politics)

Who wants to miss a final like this? Half of Europe is glued to their television screens tonight to watch Spain v England, the brilliant finale of a 2024 European Championship that, to be honest, is not at all electrifying. The Berlin stadium itself is of course full, and in the stands – united by politics as well as sport – there are also three heads of government: those of Spain, the United Kingdom and Germany. One of them will party at the end of the evening, another will leave saddened, another will cautiously meditate – as usual – on the result: of the final, and of the tournament. It is obviously Pedro Sanchez – who has already rejoiced in recent hours on social networks about the triumph of his compatriot Carlos Alcaraz at Wimbledon -, Keir Starmer – brand new winner of the British elections at the head of the Labour Party – and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. It was the latter who graciously tweeted the photo of the unusual three-way encounter, just before the start of the match. Happy, for once, to welcome in Berlin two additional heads of government from the same political family, the centre-left. This now seemed rare in Europe. And on the contrary, surprise, the scene could soon be repeated in the form of a quartet even with a French Prime Minister from the left, if the New Popular Front and the Macronists find a solution in the coming weeks. “We are impatiently awaiting the final!” wrote Scholz in German, Spanish and English when sharing the photo. Difficult in the stands, between one action and another of the players on the green surface, the three did not find the time to also speak about the gigantic challenges for European politics and for the left – the day after the attack against Donald Trump and on the eve of the crucial week for the start of the new European legislature.
