League-CEI Clash on Autonomy, Bishops: “It's a Mortal Danger.” Salvini's Response: “They're Shooting at Zero”

“The Italian bishops (all of them?) are fighting for autonomy, approved in Parliament and recognised in the Constitution.” This was declared by the deputy prime minister and leader of the League, Matteo Salvini, commenting on the interview with Republic of the vice-president of the Italian Episcopal Conference, the bishop of Cassano allo Ionio, Francesco Savino, according to whom with the reform of differentiated autonomy not only will there be “as many Italys as there are regions, but there is also a risk of a Wild West among the poor”. “With all due respect – Salvini writes on social networks – I absolutely do not agree: autonomy will bring efficiency, modernity, more services to citizens and less waste. What do you think of the attacks of the bishops?”, we read.

After the push by Forza Italia, the opposition, but also the contestation of the law by Puglia, Tuscany and Sardinia and the referendum of repeal, the Lega law was rejected yesterday, Tuesday 28 August, also by the Italian Episcopal Conference: “The South has understood that the reform is a Trojan horse to create two Italys: one prosperous, the other abandoned to itself”, comments the Zuppi deputy to the CEI. When asked if this is the reason why the South is signing the referendum en masse, Savino answers without hesitation: “Yes, because it perceives the mortal danger”. The position of the CEI, contrary to the flag law of the League, had already been manifested a few months ago, following the approval of the text. But the bishop's words have relaunched the debate. From whatever angle one looks at it, the autonomy reform has become a minefield: a subject of conflict between the majority and the opposition, a source of divisions between government allies, attacked by the Southern Regions, contested by the CEI. Today, Wednesday 28 August, the Northern League had begun to attack the CEI also on the migrant front.
