Part 1: introduction

“Hi, if you're here it's to see my new series, called: 'Who the fuck did I marry?'. I want to tell you the story of how I met, married, and left a true pathological liar. I'll tell you the whole truth, even if I don't make a good impression. I won't use the real names of the protagonists, because I don't want to hurt anyone. And even if none of the things I'm going to say are really funny, I'm going to laugh about it, so as not to dramatize it. I'm a normal woman who thought she had found her soul mate, but that wasn't the case.” With these words, in a video that has nearly thirty million views, creator ReesaTeesa presented the series that space of just two weeks has made it the phenomenon of the moment on the Chinese app. Users don't know it yet, but they are about to discover that they have unwittingly found themselves on a roller coaster of emotions.

In the first “episode,” ReesaTeesa talks about where and when it all started: March 2020, a few weeks before America entered its first lockdown. She says she met her ex-husband, nicknamed “Legion” for the occasion, on Facebook. They meet, they love each other, they both admit that they are looking for a stable relationship. So after the outbreak of the pandemic, they start to coexist. Legion presents himself as a former footballer and seems respected and sociable: Teesa says he spent entire afternoons on the phone, talking to relatives or friends. Besides, there was no other way to stay in touch with them, he explained, since he had recently moved from California to Atalanta. In fact, he had recently been promoted to vice president of a well-known condiment company.

The relationship

In fact, Legion at first appears to be more than rich, and when the couple decides to buy a house to fulfill their dream of love, he offers to pay the deposit. However, the process fails repeatedly, in different houses, for always different reasons. Weird thing that also happens when the two try to buy a car. But love, as we know, makes us blind: Teesa therefore ignores these warning signs and agrees in 2021 to become his wife. And this is where the real hell begins. Because in the months that followed, little by little, the woman began a series of in-depth investigations into the man she had just married, alarmed by small details, seemingly insignificant inconsistencies. However, they were only the tip of the iceberg. In fact, Teesa discovers that Legion was not the vice president of the previously mentioned condiment company nor did he have a background as a football player. Instead, he falsified his documents, lied about his Social Security number, and created fake bank statements. Not only.

A spiral of lies

In several cases, the man pretended to speak to someone in front of her, holding conversations when there was no one on the other end of the line. It doesn't stop there. Teesa discovers that Legion had a criminal record (for trespassing and impersonating a police officer) and had lied about his previous marriages. He also said (obviously lying) that he had had a daughter, who however died tragically. And, in a theater cut worthy of the most imaginative screenwriters, he also discovers that Legion has a twin brother who leads exactly the life that the man had passed off as his own. Finally, and this seems least compared to everything else, the man had cheated on Teesa several times during their relationship. What Teesa had anticipated would later be confirmed by Legion's (real) ex-wife, whom she managed to identify and contact: everything the man said was false, and everyone she knew had severed ties with him. precisely because of his pathological habit of lying.

A happy ending?

The obligatory epilogue arrives in June of the same year. Teesa decides to divorce and says that since then she has worked to forgive herself for being involved in such a situation and for believing the many lies Legion created. But not every evil has a glimmer of hope. After her 50-episode run, Teesa naturally became an internet star. He now has nearly 3.5 million followers on TikTok. And she launched her own branded T-shirts: neutral-colored T-shirts that read “I Survived the Legion.” Reflecting on her decision to publish her story years later, Reesa said she hoped she could prevent someone else from making the same mistakes she did. “I can honestly tell you that being single sucks, in my opinion,” she said in her latest video. “But being married to the wrong person is a kind of hell that no one should go through.”
