The offside rule may change, FIFA is considering a reform: the “Wenger rule”

Soon a new revolution in the world of football. Ifab, the International Football Association Board, has reportedly agreed to further test the change proposed by former Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger, now head of global football development for FIFA.

An innovation which – also welcomed by FIFA President Gianni Infantino – should lead to more spectacular and offensive football: behind Wenger's proposal, in fact, is also a study by the Premier League which shows how, with the new rule, calls for offsides would be reduced by half. The project will therefore undergo its crucial phase in the coming months and final approval could be obtained during the Ifab meeting in February 2025.

The supporter of this revision of the offside rule would be, as mentioned, Arsène Wenger; the concept of the former French coach – we read in the English press – is centered on letting the attacker defeat the defender as long as he maintains contact with at least one part of the body that allows him to score a goal in the lineout of the last defender. Thus, since last November, the world body has been testing this new approach in youth tournaments in Italy and Sweden.
