Rome, children insulted and beaten by kindergarten teachers: two educators sentenced

When parents entrusted their children to the “Papero Giallo” daycare center in the Eurozone of Rome, they did not know what the little ones would face within those walls. The first suspicions arose when children aged 19 to 32 months came home crying, sometimes with bruises on their faces. The parents' concerns led to more in-depth investigations, which turned into indigestible discoveries. The little ones were insulted, humiliated, beaten. Sometimes you slapped yourself. Grabbed by the hair, in other cases, or hit on the head with their own toys. A silent nightmare that lasted two years, from 2016 to 2018, which brought 4 educators to justice, accused of mistreatment. A fifth was accused of having witnessed, impassively, the physical and verbal violence.

Sentences

The head of the educational services of the 9th municipality responsible for managing the nursery school is also on trial. In her case, it was an accusation of non-reporting: she had allegedly been warned several times by her parents about the harassment. However, today, July 2, 2024, she was acquitted by the court of Rome. While two educators were sentenced to 1 year and 4 months and 1 year and 8 months respectively. The penalty payment is subject to the payment of 3 thousand euros to each of the civil parties involved. Today's sentence comes years after that of the three remaining educators, who opted for a summary judgment and were sentenced in 2021 to 16 months in prison.
