Pisa, thousands of people take to the streets after batons against students: “Enough police violence, shame” – Video

The response of the citizens of Pisa, after the police violence against the students who took to the streets to demand a ceasefire in Gaza, is unanimous. More than five thousand people gathered in Piazza dei Cavalieri, where this morning the officers' charges prevented the passage of the pro-Palestinian march, to peacefully express their solidarity with the demonstrators. On the monumental staircase of the École Normale which overlooks the square, banners were plastered with the words “Enough police violence” and “No to institutional violence”, as well as posters calling for “Stop the genocide” and a “free Palestine”. Slogans “Shame, shame” and “Charge us now” were also chanted at the police forces involved in the clashes. The demonstration arose from two separate demonstrations organized simultaneously under the Commune and under the prefecture, by the forces of the radical left, by center-left parties as well as by unions and various associations.

Digos will submit documents and videos to the prosecution tomorrow

Meanwhile, sources at the Pisan Police Headquarters reported that Digos will submit documents and videos relating to the police accusations to the police headquarters tomorrow, Saturday, February 24. These are documents collected immediately after the events, the sources further explain, by the personnel present on the square and documenting what happened. These documents will help the judicial authority launch a thorough investigation. The objective, depending on what filters through investigative circles, is also to quickly provide certain answers to clarify episodes which have sparked strong controversies in the city.

The opposition: “Piantedosi should clarify this in the House”

The case, which attracted political attention after the release of videos showing police attacks, prompted political forces to call for an end to the violence. “No more batons against students,” said Elly Schlein. The leader of the M5S, Giuseppe Conte, is also on the same line: “Today’s images are worrying, not worthy of our country.” For the opposition, which appealed to the Minister of the Interior, Matteo Piantedosi, to appear in the House as quickly as possible, today's episodes are “unacceptable”. Nicola Fratoianni announced “an urgent question, yet another, to Piantedosi” and proposed “to his colleagues from the other parliamentary groups to imagine a democratic escort to the demonstrations”. But condemnation also came from the rector of the University of Pisa, who said he was “deeply concerned and disconcerted”, and from the mayor of the Tuscan city, Michele Conti, at the head of a center-right majority: “Pisa is a place for discussion, Violence can never be used in any way.
