According to an image circulating on the Internet, the European Commission will force bakers to use 10% cricket flour in their bread from 2025. Bakers who violate this obligation would be sanctioned. The source is not an institutional site, but a TikTok account which reports crazy news. This is yet another false news regarding insect meal (we talk about it here, here and here).

The proposal does not exist

There is currently no proposal of this magnitude on the European Commission portal. We find no matches when searching for “insects” (here and here) or when searching for “cricket” (for “cricket flour”, here and here). There is no confirmation of this news, while there are at most a few articles on the use of cricket flour for the production of bread where only the authorization for food use is mentioned in the European Union.

Concerning the use of certain products, such an obligation is not feasible. Insect meal, like all other food products, may not be suitable for some people who may be allergic. The European Commission deals with food safety, in particular so-called “Novel Food” (“food which was not consumed to a significant extent by humans in the EU before May 15, 1997). , date on which the first regulation on novel foods' ) for which there is an obligation to correctly label products.

The TikTok account source of fake news

At the bottom right we notice a TikTok account @video.3000. The image shared on Facebook is nothing more than a screenshot of a post published by the TikTok account:

Among the posts published by the @video.3000 account we also find that of a phantom farewell to toilet paper in Italy from 2025 with the obligation to install a “hygienic roll for private parts”. An obvious “troll”, as the cricket flour one probably is.

Conclusions

The European Commission will not force bakers to use cricket flour in their bread from 2025. No such proposal has been published in institutional channels. The source is a TikTok account that posts crazy news.
