Unlocked. Meta has announced that it will remove restrictions on former US President Donald Trump's Facebook and Instagram accounts ahead of next week's Republican convention. CNN reported the news. The company said the decision was made to ensure that Trump's position is the same as Joe Biden's, a sort of “digital level playing field.” “As we assess our responsibility to enable maximum political expression, we believe the American people should be able to hear from presidential candidates on an equal footing,” Meta said in a statement. “As a result, former President Trump, as the nominee of the Republican Party, will no longer be subject to the harshest suspension sanctions.” Trump's Facebook and Instagram accounts were reinstated in early 2023, after a two-year ban following the Capitol Hill insurrection on January 6, 2021. At the time, Meta said it would put additional protections in place on Trump's account to “deter repeat offenders.” In 2022, following his suspension from Facebook and Instagram, as well as the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, Trump launched his own social media site, Truth Social.
