Fiorentina general manager Joe Barone died today, March 19, after being hospitalized since last Sunday, following an illness before Atalanta-Fiorentina. After undergoing emergency surgery following a heart attack at Milan's San Raffaele, the manager remained in intensive care in a critical condition. Already in the last medical bulletin yesterday, March 18, Barone's condition was described as very serious. In a statement, the Viola club confirmed that Barone was kept alive thanks to the support of a machine. This is the “resurrection machine”, a cutting-edge tool used in the most serious cases. Over the past 24 hours, Barone was joined by his four children, Giuseppe, Peter, Gabriella and Salvatore, who arrived from the United States, and his wife Camilla, as well as friends and colleagues. Tomorrow, March 20, Barone would have turned 58 years old.

Fiorentina general manager since 2019, Barone has been a close collaborator of Rocco Comisso for years. Born in Pozzallo, in the province of Ragusa, at the age of eight he moved with his family to Brooklyn where, after completing his studies, he found work in a banking institution. After meeting Comisso, he started working for him at Mediacom. In 2017, he was vice president of the New York Cosmos, after the acquisition of Comisso.
