In Pisa, the mayor (center-right) sides with the clubbed boys: “They expressed their opinions openly”

The mayor of Pisa, Michele Conti, at the head of a center-right council with the Brothers of Italy as the first party and the League as the third, attacks the method used against the students of his city. “Violence cannot be used to suppress a demonstration by high school students. Everyone must be free to express their thoughts,” he explains in an interview with Corriere della Sera. “From the videos I saw – he emphasizes – it did not look like a flood of dangerous extremists. But there will be investigations and it is not me who must judge but the magistrates. I will just say one thing: for me, they looked like children, most of them minors, expressing their opinions openly.” And the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella for Conti “is absolutely right and I thank him for his sensitivity and his authority. These children have just gone through the terrible years of Covid, they were forced to stay at home, not to go to school, to forget their friends. They are teenagers and that requires a lot of understanding. And we have to set a good example. These are not batons. I don't think there were any serious public order problems, we should have acted differently.”
