Holi, the spring festival that colors India with rainbows, photos

The week of Holi, the festival of colors, ends today in India.

Throughout the country, people of all ages crowd in front of temples and then give life to “happenings” during which tons of “gulal”, the brightly colored powders, pink, yellow, turquoise, orange, emerald green with which we happily smear ourselves.

Last night, traditional Holika Dahan bonfires were lit across the subcontinent, the rite of purification which symbolizes the defeat of good over evil.

Holi, a religious festival which for centuries has coincided with the beginning of spring and highlights rebirth and reincarnation, has gradually transformed into an almost carnivalesque event, most appreciated by tourists and photographers, and has been exported around the world entire.
