Giorgia Meloni withdraws defamation suit against Domani

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has withdrawn her defamation lawsuit against Domani, the newspaper currently run by Emiliano Fittipaldi. The newspaper itself made this known, reporting that the lawsuit was filed after a 2021 article by Fittipaldi on the purchase of masks for Covid-19. Meloni himself was mentioned in a passage of the investigation. The former head of Fratelli d'Italia had been contacted by Fabio Pietrella, president of Confartigianato Moda. He wants to know how to make the emergency commissioner available for the supply of medical equipment, such as masks.

At that point, according to the newspaper's reconstruction, Meloni had called Domenico Arcuri and received an email address where he could register. The judge had decided to bring Fittipaldi and Stefano Feltri, then editor-in-chief of the newspaper, to trial. The lawsuit challenged the term “recommended” mentioned in Petrella's article. The prime minister's decision was notified to the Vercelli police headquarters a few hours before Mattarella's speech on freedom of the press.
