Elections in Sardinia, Giorgia Meloni furious: “The League has betrayed”. But the flop is all his

The most important data from the regional elections in Sardinia is the comparison between the list votes and those of the center-right candidate Paolo Truzzu. While the parties that supported him received 49% of the vote, he stopped at 45%. But there is also the incredible defeat of Cagliari: although he is the first citizen, Trux he achieved 34.54% while his challenger Alessandra Todde won over 53%. There is reason to say that the center-right of the island chose the wrong candidate. But the Brothers of Italy wanted this candidate very strongly, refusing a recall to Christian Solinas and provoking the anger of the League. Yet Giorgia Meloni is furious. And the approximately five thousand votes that Truzzu lacks are the number that makes him cry conspiracy.

League strategy

The idea is that there was a strategy by Matteo Salvini to boycott Truzzu. Newspapers reported on it on the eve of the vote, claiming that the Northern League's grudge was linked to the Italian Brothers' refusal to hold a third term. In this perspective, the members of the Northern League (and their allies on the island) would have decided to punish the mayor of Cagliari with the “complicity” of the Sardinian Action Party: for the defenestration of Solinas and for the intention to cut off its wings. Northern governors by refusing them the third race. One piece of data gives consistency to this reading: the difference between the lists that supported the candidate for governor and the votes for Truzzu is around five thousand votes, which represents a little more than 3% of the total: c that is to say precisely the percentage obtained by the League at the polls. The imprint also reports the comment of a Sardinian leader: “Go and see the effect of the split vote in Cagliari and Quartu”.

The split vote

And again: “In Rome, they must understand that they cannot impose anything on us at home.” And at this point, fears are growing within the FdI and the government regarding the upcoming elections. As for the regional elections in Abruzzo, where another FdI candidate is running: Marco Marsilio. And where the League had resisted a little on the name. Even if the polls give him a large advantage here, this may not be enough to leave the Prime Minister calm on March 10. Hence the accusation of “treason” against the League, reported today by daily event. But also a call: “Whatever happens, we must remain united”. Also to deal with the hemorrhage of his party: the FdI was the first entity in Sardinia in the political elections, it has now been overtaken by the Democratic Party.

Meloni's flop

But in reality, the failure lies entirely with the Prime Minister. If it is true that Solinas's advice had disappointed the electorate and was therefore right to change sides, it was she who imposed the presidential candidate by choosing Truzzu to the detriment of the others. A veiled criticism in this sense comes from Forza Italia, where senator Maurizio Gasparri notes the good result of the Azzurri but also adds that the rule in choosing the candidate should not be to let the one with the most votes be chosen. Instead, we need the right candidate, regardless of party affiliation. The Prime Minister is the underlying reasoning, stuck on the wrong one. And he also underestimated the League's firepower by taking on the Northern League for the third term on the eve of the election.

Elections and lessons

A perspective reiterated by Fi also through Giorgio Mulé in an interview with Republic: “We should not make a show of force by weighing the votes during the different elections and we should not need to arrive so close to the elections to choose the candidates. When the center-right does things quickly, things go badly: see what happened in Rome. The lesson of the Sardinian vote is this. ” And not only. As he recalled Young Trend, with the victory of Todde in Sardinia, the M5 conquers a region for the first time, the center-left takes a region from the center-right and this had not happened since 2015 (with Vincenzo De Luca in Campania), the center-right loses its first regional elections since 2020. The lessons are numerous. Did the Prime Minister learn about them?
