A piece of jewelry that belonged to the last queen of France, Marie Antoinette, is on display at a New York department store. The cameo bracelet, decorated with garnets, flowers and gold leaf, is among the pieces on display at the residence of independent jewelry house Mellerio, through October 27. It was purchased by one of the queen’s ladies-in-waiting around 1780, when fifteen-year-old Jean-Baptiste Mellerio was standing outside the Palace of Versailles with his jewelry display case and the queen’s carriage pulled up in front of him.
