Accident in Milan, a van hits four people on the sidewalk: a tourist dies. The driver tested positive for alcohol

The 55-year-old driver of a van who, on the afternoon of Thursday 1 August, lost control of his vehicle in Milan and left the road, climbed onto the sidewalk and hit four pedestrians, tested positive for alcohol. A 49-year-old tourist died after being taken to hospital in Niguarda, another is hospitalized in serious condition. The accident happened around 4:30 pm in via Boccaccio, in a central area a few blocks from the Conciliazione metro station. The van was coming from Piazza Virgilio, towards Piazza Giovine, when it skidded and hit the traffic light and people waiting for the green light. A 49-year-old pedestrian was seriously injured and suffered a cardiac arrest. Doctors who arrived on the scene resuscitated him and had to amputate one of his arms, but upon arrival at the hospital the man died. Two other pedestrians were hospitalized – a 21-year-old girl in green code, a 22-year-old German in San Raffaele in serious condition with trauma to the head, face, arms and leg – while a fourth was treated on site. The driver of the vehicle, who tested positive in the preliminary breathalyzer test carried out on site, was also hospitalized at the San Carlo hospital under green code. Firefighters also intervened on site to extract the injured from the rubble.
