Giorgia Meloni at the UN: “We are with Ukraine”. But he returns the day before the summit with Biden and Zelensky

Israel must respect civilians. Ukraine must be supported. And the UN must do more against human trafficking. Giorgia Meloni's speech at the UN General Assembly touches on the most important points of world politics. But the prime minister also decides to reduce the UNGA mission in New York by one day, from September 25 – as planned – to the 24th. So explains the newspaper.AdnKronoswill not be present at the summit on Ukraine organized by Joe Biden on Wednesday, in the presence of Volodymyr Zelensky. Or rather, there will be, but connected from Rome. And he will miss, once again, the traditional reception at the Metropolitan Museum offered by the President of the States to the participants in the United Nations General Assembly.

Israel

Last year, he spent the evening with his daughter Ginevra in an Italian club. And today the controversies could return. But in the meantime, Meloni reaffirms at the UN “the right of the State of Israel to defend itself against external attacks”. But he asks to respect international law by protecting the civilian population. “And following the same reasoning, we obviously also support the right of the Palestinian people to have their own state, but for this to come about soon, it is necessary for the Palestinians to entrust it to a leadership inspired by dialogue, the stabilization of the Middle East. the East and autonomy,” he adds. Citing the Abraham Accords as an example of “beneficial coexistence and cooperation based on mutual recognition.”

Russia and Ukraine

Earlier, the Prime Minister had spoken about Russia and Ukraine, warning that “we cannot turn the other way in the face of kyiv's right to defend its borders, its sovereignty, its freedom.” A wound that has undermined the international system and “has destabilizing effects far beyond the borders” of this war and “like a domino, it reignites or explodes” other conflicts. Then the appeal to Venezuela: “The international community cannot stand idly by while in Venezuela, almost two months after the elections, the electoral result is still not recognized, but in the meantime the brutal repression, the death of dozens of protesters, the arbitrary arrest of thousands of political opponents, the indictment and exile of the presidential candidate of the democratic opposition. It is our duty to raise our voices.”

The Global War on Traffickers

Meloni then recalled that a year ago he had proposed “to declare a world war on human traffickers”. I am pleased that this call has not fallen on deaf ears and that an agreement has been reached first at the G7 level to create international coordination to dismantle these criminal networks. But much remains to be done. The United Nations must do more, because these criminal organisations are re-proposing, in other forms, a slavery that this Assembly, in other times, played a fundamental role in eradicating once and for all. There is no going back.

Finally, the reform of the Security Council. Which “cannot ignore the principles of equality, democracy and representativeness”. Alongside the need for global governance on artificial intelligence. “Destiny challenges us, but ultimately it does so to test us. In the storm, we can demonstrate that we are up to the task that history has entrusted to us. Italy, as always, is ready to do its part”, he concluded, quoting the patriot Carlo Pisacane.
