Bergamini Murder: Prosecutors Request 23 Years in Prison for Footballer's Ex-Girlfriend

The Castrovillari prosecutor's office has requested 23 years in prison for Isabella Internò, ex-girlfriend of Donato Denis Bergaminithe footballer from Cosenza, who died on November 18, 1989. According to the prosecutor, the woman was the instigator and participated with others in the murder of the then 27-year-old, whose body was found along the state road 106 in Roseto Capo Spulico.

The magistrate requested general mitigating circumstances for the woman, and therefore a sentence of 23 years instead of life imprisonment, since 35 years have passed since the crime. The woman, who was not in the courtroom, is accused of voluntary homicide aggravated by premeditation and trivial motives in collaboration with unknown persons.

Prosecutor: “Isabella betrayed the boy's affection for her”

The prosecutor of Castrovillari, Alessandro D'Alessiosupported by the deputy Luca Primicerio throughout the indictment, stressed: “Internò acted willingly with the identified persons. Isabella Internò betrayed the affection that the boy had for her, she exasperated the relationship and to save her honor she did not hesitate to act as we know. But for the time spent, he deserves the generic mitigating circumstances and that is why we do not ask for life imprisonment, but 23 years of imprisonment.“.

According to the magistrate, the crime would have given rise to a “patriarchal context“, which necessitated the celebration”of a forced marriage” that the young girl, then twenty years old, would have wished in 1987 after falling pregnant with the footballer.

“Bergamini did not want to marry her because of her obsessive nature”

The replacement Primicio He then added: “Bergamini, although he wanted to keep the child, would never have wanted to marry her because of his obsessive nature.” The woman therefore chose to go to London to have an abortion. Internò began to stalk and obsess the man, “and continued to do so until the end, even though their relationship had been over for some time.”“.

To reach these conclusions, the magistrates relied on the statements of Tiziana Rota, wife of footballer Maurizio Lucchetti and close friend of Internò at the time of the events. The accused confided to her that if Bergamini had not married her, it would have been “a dead man, because he dishonored me, must come back to me because I want to have him killed“.

Suicide insinuations: “Denis jumped in like a fish”

Internò himself For years he claimed that Bergamini had committed suicide, stating: “Denis threw himself in front of the truck that hit him“. On the contrary his sister, Donata Bergaminialways supported the murder hypothesis and, upon leaving the courthouse, he declared: “I was happy because the truths that my father and I had been shouting from the beginning emerged. These truths should have appeared in 1989, but someone did not want to do it. After so many years, Internò could speak and behave differently“.

Lawyer: “It's absurd to wait for justice for 35 years”

His lawyer, lawyer Fabio Anselmoadded: “It is true that being convicted after 35 years may seem an unjust act, but it is also true that waiting for justice for 35 years is certainly even more unjust.” Now, the floor is given to the civil parties and then to the defense. The judgment is expected on October 1.
