Naples, no glasses with veiled Christ and gun: “This harms the image of the work”

The court judgment after the lawsuit brought by the heirs of the prince of Sangro, patron of the Sansevero chapel

Trademarks violated and image of the work damaged. This is how the judges of the Court of Naples expressed their opinion on the commercial idea of two companies which produced and promoted the limited edition “Malaterra” glasses with the image of the veiled Christ. In fact, the face of the famous work by Giuseppe Sammartino kept in the Sansevero Chapel was printed on one of the branches of the glasses of discord. On the other side there is a gun. The tips of the canes end in a shape reminiscent of the Vele di Scampia. The heirs of Prince Raimondo di Sangro, now co-owners of the chapel, are outraged.

The controversy

The descendants of the Prince of Sangro therefore began a legal battle against the companies promoting the project, defended by lawyers Maurizio Borghese and Rossella Giordano. Urgent conservatory proceedings have been opened against the two companies. For the judges, the image of the veiled Christ was reproduced without authorization for commercial purposes.
