DOVE August Issue: Editorial and Travel Diary

Those who… I’m not a tourist, I’m a traveler. And then they look for the most famous restaurant, why didn’t you go there? Those who… wait for me to post it on Instagram. And they spend more time selecting the right filter, while the sun disappears into the sea. Those who… I found a secret place that no one knows about. And then they tag it on social media to make sure everyone knows about it.

Those who… local cuisine is everything. And then they rush to McDonald’s as soon as they land. Those who… travel is about living like a local. And they can’t live without super-fast Wi-Fi and Netflix. Those who… travel is about the experience, not the destination. But they panic if their flight is an hour late. Those who… the best thing is meeting new people. But they can’t even ask for directions.

Traveling is a unique and personal experience and everyone has the right to live it as they wish. There are no strict rules about what it means to be a good traveler. The important thing is to feel free, light of guilt and, as the philosopher says, Vito Mancusoalways ready to welcome wonder, not to simply let oneself live.

“I don't know if beauty will save the world. However, I am sure that it can save this little piece of the world that is each of us. Feeding on beauty, our ego gradually frees itself from its limits and its appropriating will, as well as from its fears and anxieties; in short, it frees itself from all this incandescent and sometimes rotting magma that we call the whole ego, often at the origin of the so-called evil of living and of so much suffering” (The Way of Beautyone, Garzanti, 2018).

Here, it is with this spirit that we thought of ours August Special. There is a thin thread that binds the desert ofOman to the wild horses running free in the Kazakhstanto the silent expanses of iceIceland and one of the last tropical forests on the planet on the island of SumatraIn Indonesia.

And this is the spectacle of the world, of nature. A nature always inhabited by man who, as Mancuso says, must not forget to go towards others, so that the journey (even that of life) really has meaning. And it doesn't matter, in the end, not being able to do without a Big Mac, what matters is knowing how to feed on the beauty that frees us.
